Christos Papaioannou

Christos Papaioannou is a Credit Rating Agency (CRA) Expert. He is currently working at the European Central Bank as Supervision Analyst where he is a member of a Joint Supervision Team in DG Micro-Prudential Supervision I, responsible for the supervision of significant Institutions and responsible for Credit Risk, Internal Models and Operational Risk areas. Christos has more than 10 years of experience within the CRA field. In 2007, he worked as Special Associate in Risk Management (including Market, Credit, Operational Risk, Basel II and ALM) at Hellenic Postbank. From 2008 to 2010, as Analyst at ICAP Group,he developed and monitored credit risk models and policies for both consumers and corporates for the behalf of financial institutions and large companies, he was also involved in Corporate Credit Ratings assignments and Project Finance methodology development. In 2011, as Compliance Officer, he also participated in the recognition procedure of ICAP Group as a CRA, in the development of policies and procedures for compliance with the EU CRA Regulation and monitored the company’s regulatory compliance requirements framework (including ones from EU Regulations, the European Central Bank, Bank of Greece and the European Securities and Markets Authority). His previous roles include Software Analyst (2011 - 2012) at Systemic Risk Management Solutions, during which he was responsible for the development of credit risk models for different banks and financial institutions. From 2012 to 2013 Christos worked as Compliance Officer at Hellastat to develop and validate credit risk models for financial institutions as well as develop Credit Rating assignment policies and procedures. He was also Project Manager in the recognition procedure of the company as a Credit Rating Agency and as a Rating Tool under the Eurosystem Credit Assessment Framework (ECAF). Christos practiced as Supervision Officer at the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), from 2013 to 2016, leading and coordinating different CRAs, leading the Project of the horizontal investigation of the validation and review of the methodologies of the large 4 CRAs.

Christos holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Science, Statistics and Insurance Science from the University of Piraeus, Greece(2005) and a Master’s Degree in Science and Risk Management from the University of Southampton (2007) with a final dissertation on Predicting Bankruptcy in the Textile and Clothing Industry in Greece.

Christos participated in numerous Training Courses including Advanced Training in Operational Risk for Financial Institutions (ECB; 2017); Application of IFRS9 to Financial Institutions (ECB; 2017); Project Planning and Reporting (ESMA; 2015); Advanced Seminar on On-site Supervision (ESMA, 2015); Writing with Impact (ESMA, 2014); Communication Skills (ESMA, 2014), Effective Presentation Skills (ESMA, 2014) and Data Mining in the Financial Services Industry (SAS Institute, 2010).
